Colin Hanton, re Mimi:
"In those early days we certainly only practised at Mendips on a very few occasions as a full six-piece group. Although she was more relaxed about things than you might expect, Mimi was concerned about the noise we made and possible complaints from either the neighbours or of distracting the student lodgers who were studying next door in the dining room. […] having said that, when we did Mimi was very hospitable, she always served us tea and biscuits in the tiny morning room next to the kitchen.
She had the ability to terrify everybody, a cross between a headmistress and a chief librarian. Yet she was also the first adult I recall who would hold a conversation with you as an equal. She didn't talk down to you or treat you like a silly teenager like a lot of parents would. She would talk to us about the group and the music and other subjects, about life in general. She paid us respect, for which, in turn, I respected her."
Colin Hanton, re Julia:
"He said he was going to see his mum and asked did I want to go with him? I was a bit surprised by this because up to this point no one in the Quarry Men had mentioned John's mum and I'd never thought to ask if he even had one. I just accepted he was living with his aunt for whatever reason. It wasn't unusual at the time - post-war - for a parent to be missing. Think about it: Eric's dad was missing, and Ivan's, both casualties of the war. In those days many families were missing people: not just dads but mums too, because of the Blitz. It was something you almost took for granted, so you didn't talk about it. It was private. Anyway I went along with John to visit his mother.
I was immediately taken with Julia: she was vivacious, full of fun and friendly, not like most mums I knew who could be a bit guarded when you first met them. […] We hadn't been there very long before she produced a banjo and began singing a song. I was fascinated: a mum playing a banjo and singing. In my experience this was a bit different. And she was really good."
"Apart from the church fete the only time I remember seeing Julia in the audience was when we played a club on Penny Lane. […] We could all see that John was really pleased when his mum showed up that night. the rest of us were too: for one thing her presence almost doubled the size of the audience. As I looked out from my drums she was sitting almost at the front, on the right-hand side of the stage quite close to where we were, while other members of the audience were dancing. John acknowledged her from the stage and played up to her quite a lot, as if he was performing just for her. Every time we finished a song, Julia clapped very loudly and enthusiastically which was great because not many others were. She was clearly pleased and proud to see and hear John performing with his group.
After we had finished, Julia came over and told us how much she had enjoyed our set. As ever she was great to be around: one of the few parents who appreciated what we were doing. Jim McCartney was another. However, there was something special and engaging about Julia. All these years later I still feel privileged to have known her and to have witnessed the musical bond between her and John. It was very loving and very strong."

I've just finished Pre:Fab by Colin Hanton. It's lovely. I love books by people who knew them before they were beatles. I love the tiny soft-cheeked quarry man world. I love most of all their obsession with talent contests and how often they tried and how never they won. I love that they were 'scored' by how loud the audience's applause was - something the beatles would later win on a global historical magnificent scale because Paul doesn't like to lose at things.
This is Colin talking about Paul's first (or nearly first) gig. They're entering a talent contest but when they get there, they're expected to pay to come into the club, as if they're regular customers:
"[John] didn't like it one bit: paying to play did not sit right with John Lennon, and it is this that convinces me that this was Paul's first performance as a Quarry Man. You see we did eventually pay to go in - John included, and it was Paul McCartney who convinced John we should do so. Paul's reasoning was we were more than good enough to win the prize money. In Paul's mind it was a foregone conclusion. He argued that as we would soon be walking off with the cash prize anyway, we could afford to pay to go inside. He was very persuasive. His conviction was simply irresistible. (I think more than anything, having come this far to play with us for the very first time, Paul really wanted to play.) So we all did cough up and in we trooped, set up, performed and, of course, proceeded not to win. It was undoubtedly a reality check for our new super-confident guitarist. We all came away out of pocket, but steeped in admiration for Paul's enthusiasm and blind faith in the Quarry Men's ability. He had impressed us all."
Another time, months later, waiting for a different talent show to start:
"Sitting in the green room, waiting to go on, we noticed a poster on the wall advertising another talent contest scheduled for the next weekend. It was a bit different from usual, however, in that it was specifically for male singers - either as solo acts or duets, not groups." Colin remembers that the poster clearly excited Paul's interest, who immediately drew it to John's attention, commenting "we could do that - we could enter that as a duo." Without hesitation John emphatically replied, "No, I'm not doing that, we're a group." Colin looked anxiously to see what Paul might have to say about John's rebuttal, but he didn't say a word. "That was the end of that discussion. In my presence, Paul never suggested it or anything like it again."

Cable (2020) Highlights Pt 1
It's a great run overall, and gives the character a much needed recontextualisation - 90s edgelord anti hero who's older than his parents becomes 'fresh faced teen struggling with insecurity and the legacy of his older self.'
He wants to have fun but he also drives himself relentlessly on self-appointed missions. He's dating all five Cuckoos at the same time but he's a pretty crappy boyfriend. He's deeply aware that he's not his older self and he's afraid to ask for help, to fail. He's struggling to enjoy what should be the best time of his life. He doesn't know how to be a teenager (not that anyone does,) especially not one who has to be prepared for Kyle Reese and forever war steez. Pouch life looms.
Issue 1 opens with Cable vs Wolverine in the Quarry (a gladiator arena/dojo thing for mutants to practice combat and settle beef.)
Tumblr media
'Aww, is little Logan's metal ass too heavy to move?'
It's a hilarious line without context, though it does a lot of work in worldbuilding - establishing Young Cable's personality, Logan's place in the Summers-Grey polycule, mutant solidarity and culture, and the infrastructure ahead of the Crucible in X-Men #7. The quarry isn't used a lot, though we get a noodle incident where Magik is the only person to be disqualified.
Tumblr media
What did Magik do? It was the very first match ever vs Gorgon of all people, and Silver Samurai (who has quite the rap sheet) flat out decided nope, you're done - get out of here. Probably sent his ass to Limbo or summoned demons lol. Good to see Callisto is a regulator, though aren't Artie and Leech kids? I I love that Rogue beating up Havok, and I headcanon that the Cuckoo fight was purely physical - a psychic duel is not a spectator sport whereas two identical teenage girls whaling on each other is.
Scott and Jean really want to make the most of getting a second chance at raising Cable, though they have their own insecurities and he really doesn't want to be seen as needing them. The moment in X of Swords when Cable cracks and opens up is also one of the funniest moments and what inspired this post.
Tumblr media
That was the last thing Jean expected to hear. I wish we got Scott's face for the initial reaction, but we'll have to make do.
Tumblr media
'.......'
Tumblr media
'Doug's what?'
There's an all-time Quiet Council moment, too.
Tumblr media
Ouch.
Next time... Swords are cool, and 'how much Deadpool is too much?'

TAKING RISKS BEHIND CLOSED DOORS: Chris Hackett x fem!reader
Tumblr media
Summary: This is quite risky, she thinks but the thought disappears as soon as his lips touch her skin...
Notes: English isn't my first language. I apologize for any mistake I may have made while I wrote this short story.
Warnings: swearing, suggestive themes
•••
This is quite risky, the thought appears at the back of her mind, but it disappears just as quickly when Chris Hackett's lips touch her neck.
His kisses are slow, lingering; the kind that makes her forget about everything other than him. Her right hand runs along his back, caressing it even if his shirt is in the way - the gentle touch becomes rough a few times, when his kisses roughen up, making her whole being burn.
"Chris-" she tries to get his attention unsuccessfully, because the man is paying more attention to her skin and how his touch makes her act.
She can hear the music downstairs, she can hear the kids singing - her friends are probably there too, wondering where she went. They are doing their job, the job she also should be doing. Instead she's feeling really close to Heaven with her back against a door and Chris' body so close to hers.
"Chris-" she tries again and this time she's successful.
Her lover looks her in the eyes as his kisses come to a stop, but even then his hands are still moving. One is beside her head, keeping the both of them steady; while the other is holding her waist, his thumb gently drawing shapes into the material of her shirt.
"What is it darling?"
The way he says 'darling' sets her insides on fire and she almost forgets what she wanted to say in the first place.
"They'll figure it out." she starts explaining. "We both disappeared on them."
"Let them." he says as he presses a kiss to her cheek. "At least they'll have something to gossip about."
It would be so easy to forget about the dinner downstairs and let Chris love her and prove his love to her. She could easily let them gossip, let herself be the reason for those gossips as well.
She could let all of that happen. They aren't doing anything wrong after all, they're both adults who can date if they want to. She could let Emma call her a whore playfully, she could let Dylan send her teasing looks...
She could let go just this once...
She's about to let her feelings rule her body, when she hears a pretty scary sound from behind the door. Someone stepped inside Chris' office, the room what's right behind her. For a second she thinks she forgot how to breath.
"Mr. H?" a voice calls out and she bites her lower lip to keep her sounds of pleasure back after Chris playfully bit her skin as his hand kept on drawing those shapes.
She knows that voice. Ryan is the one in the other room, he is the one who could hear everything if they aren't quiet, he is the one who could open that door and make them fall in any second.
She puts her hand on Chris' shoulder, pushing him back. Their eyes meet and Chris smiles, his gestures hiding a special kind of mischief, the kind only she could see and no one else.
"He isn't here?" another voice speaks up and she freezes completely - that's Dylan. God, it's a risky situation!
"No." Ryan answers. "But I really need to talk to him."
"About the swimming lessons?"
"Yeah, about those too."
Her gaze must be full of fear. Chris must be able to read that correctly, but he doesn't seem to care. Instead he leans in and kisses her, their lips meeting in a slow and loving kiss - later forming into something more passionate.
Her mind is blank, empty, unable to focus on anything else but him, not being able to care about her own fear of becoming the whore of her friendgroup. She can't think that through, because Chris' kisses are too good.
"Did you check in here?"
The kisses linger and soon her neck is bitten and sucked again, and she has to press her lips tightly together to stay quiet.
Only then does it occur to her that Dylan means the door - the door behind which she is being kissed and loved. She tries to make Chris listen to her even if she can't speak up. She tries to tell him silently that if they don't stop they are screwed. She tries all of that with the last pieces of care she has in herself - and then, after a kiss right under her ear and the feeling of his fingertips touching and grabbing her naked skin under her shirt, she whimpers. She gives up and prays, not finding anymore power to refuse all the affection.
She hears a very quiet click. She feels Chris' other arm move and realizes with a grin that he just locked the door.
"Dude, just let it go. We'll see him at the firepit later anyway."
The doorknob still jiggles and the wood still shakes. Dylan still tries to open it, unsuccessfully.
"I always wanted to know what's behind that door."
It'd be a great surprise, she thinks.
As Dylan's steps fade away a bit, the kisses stop and she hears an almost unnoticeable whisper: 'Be quiet now...'.
She hears the smile in his voice even if she can't see it. She can imagine the almost smirk like curl of his lips.
Quiet.
Stay quiet.
She leans back, tilting her head to the side to give Chris more access to her neck.
Damn what the others think or know. Damn Emma's teasing words and Dylan's playful looks.
She can feel good about herself for a day too.
